The original Living Bible of 1970 was a paraphrase of the ASV. The NLT first edition (1996) was a fresh translation, dynamic in nature, of the original manuscripts. It underwent a radical revision in 2004 and is not quite as dynamic as the first edition. I know a number of the translators and it's definitely neither a paraphrase nor based on the KJV.
